Apple Adjusts Its App Store Algorithm, Impacting Some iPad Developers

To keep the playing field level and fair for all app developers, Apple on occasion changes the way its App Store ranking algorithm works, the fallout of which can impact developers’ standings in the App Store charts, which ultimately can impact their visibility, downloads, and revenue. Around a week ago, it appears that Apple yet again tweaked the way its rankings worked, but this time around, the changes have only impacted a subset of iPad app developers in the U.S. App Store.

No one knows the specifics of how Apple’s App Store ranking algorithm works, but it’s generally understood to take into account factors like download volume, velocity, and possibly other metrics like ratings or engagement.

There are a number of ways to spot a possible rankings change, but one of the easiest is to keep an eye on the rankings of top mobile apps, like Facebook and others. Because of the size and reach of these applications, a significant movement of these apps in the App Store charts can indicate that Apple could be making adjustments to how apps are weighted.

Of course, those changes can also just point to a rankings glitch, so the only way to determine if the App Store algorithm has actually changed is to survey the market in the days that follow to see if developers are seeing major changes following a sudden drop or spike in their rankings.

Beginning on Friday, July 17, something odd happened with Apple’s App Store rankings.

Facebook’s iPad app offers a good example of the change, as its app moved from a No. 2 position in “Social Networking” and a No. 7 ranking “Overall” the day before, down to No. 4 and No. 24, respectively, on Friday, and then it crashed to No. 38 in “Social Networking” and a practically invisible No. 858 “Overall” by Monday.

The app’s download ranking has since begun climbing back up, reaching No. 2 again in “Social Networking,” and No. 9 “Overall” by mid-week.

However, not all developers saw their rankings recover similarly, which is the most telling sign that this could be more than “just a glitch.”

Another indicator of an App Store algorithm change involves looking at the top mobile apps on the App Store and checking their ranking for particular keywords. If you see that there’s been a dramatic change in the keywords they rank for, then it’s a good indicator that there has been an algorithm change (presuming, of course, there hadn’t been an app update that caused the fluctuation.)

You can see in a number of top apps, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Minecraft, YouTube and Snapchat, that there was a very large change that impacted the keyword rankings beginning on July 17. (See below.)

The question on many developers’ minds after seeing a massive drop in their rankings followed by a subsequent climb back up the charts was if this change was merely an App Store bug or if Apple had made a longer-lasting adjustment.

We reached out to mobile marketing firm Fiksu, which confirmed that it had also observed non-standard App Store behavior beginning last Friday that affected iPad rankings over the course of several days.

“The apps that dropped have jumped significantly back up today,” noted Fiksu’s Chief Strategy Officer, Craig Palli on Wednesday, “but not all of them have returned to the ranks that they were at before the drop started on Friday,” he says. While he noted that the company is still investigating, as of now, it appears to be consistent with historical ranking protocol changes.

iPad Category Rankings Most Affected

In addition, in speaking with well over a dozen app developers about their individual experiences following their iPad apps’ crash in the App Store charts, we learned that a majority did see a massive drop in the charts beginning on Friday, mostly with regard to their Category rankings.

Those who claimed they weren’t affected, in some cases only had an iPhone application (which works on iPad, but is not a true iPad app), or described their app as being “low volume,” – meaning that their app has so few regular downloads that even an App Store ranking algorithm change wouldn’t push it up or down in the charts by a significant amount.

While many reported that, by later in the week, their apps’ rankings returned to “normal,” or at least close to where they were before, that wasn’t true for everyone.

example-crash

In some cases, their adjusted ranking represented only a small to medium-sized move – like say, just a few slots or as many as 10 slots lower or higher than before, to cite a couple of examples. Another said they returned to their exact same prior rank after the fluctuations stopped.

Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 11.34.24 AM

However, some developers saw much larger moves that stuck. For instance, one app moved up nearly 200 spots, then stabilized later in the week with a ranking that was nearly 50 spots higher than before.

Some developers also reported other odd behavior after the fluctuations, including impacts to their keyword rankings and top grossing chart rankings. For instance, one developer who had one of their best sales day ever thanks to a promotion they were running found they had fallen out of the Top Grossing charts after the algorithm change.

Others said that keywords they used to rank for now no longer pulled up their app in search at all, or they saw a significant drop in their popular keywords after the changes. Others still saw that different keywords or keyword combinations were working better or worse than before.

As to why some developers were less affected than others? One guess is because the algorithm adjustment was specifically focused on targeting those who were marketing their apps in a particular way.

For example, some use keyword optimization (ASO or App Store Optimization), while others rely on paid promotions or ads. If Apple only focused on some subset of these methods when making its adjustments, it follows that only some subset of apps would be affected long-term following the change.

appstore

Explains Dan Held, the co-founder at mobile development firm Analytica, there are many reasons Apple might have made an adjustment like this.

While a specific purpose behind this change may be hard to determine (unless Apple comments, which it has not), generally speaking, this change seems to be related to ranking factors, not closing down a hole, Held believes.

“The purpose of the change is to more accurately rank apps based on criteria Apple deems ‘quality.’ They might have found a large exploit some app developers were taking advantage of,  but this seems more like a very large change of what Apple sees as important ranking factors – reviews, downloads, keywords, etc.,” he says.

At the end of the day, what’s most interesting about this particular change is that it much more heavily affected iPad applications, instead of iPhone apps. Though there are some examples of iPhone apps being impacted, the biggest movements both during and after the adjustments were among those apps built for iPad. That could indicate that Apple was looking to better its rankings for those who are building specifically for Apple’s tablet, and possibly rewarding the better iPad apps in the process.

Ibotta’s New Shopping List Finds Cash Back And Rebates As You Add Items

Mobile savings app Ibotta, which got its start by targeting millennial shoppers who no longer seek out and clip paper coupons, has been working to re-think the role smartphones can play when it comes to shopping in the offline world. To date, that’s largely involved submitting receipts and scanning barcodes in order to save on in-store purchases, including those from grocery stores. Now the company is making it even easier for shoppers to save with the introduction of a smart shopping list that finds cash back for you, automatically.

Denver-based Ibotta, which is backed by $20 million in funding, is one of the more popular mobile coupon apps on the market today, among a growing group that also includes apps like Groupon’s Snap, Checkout 51, Shopmium, SavingStar and others. The app is used monthly by over 2 million active users who shop both in-store or online, and then redeem their receipts for cash back. The app can also work with stores’ loyalty cards, if applicable, to make the process simpler.

Instead of clipping newspaper coupons, consumers looking to save on grocery items and other purchases interact with the brand in order to earn cash back – generally the same amount you’d earn using a coupon, like $0.25 up to a $1, for example on grocery purchases. Users tap buttons on each rebate they want, then answer quiz or survey questions, read a fact about the product, get a recipe, share the item on social media, watch a short video, and more, in order to redeem their savings.

Brands love this because it means they’re able to communicate with their customers directly, and consumers like it because it means they can still save without having to deal with cutting out coupons from a newspaper or circular.

In addition to rebates from a variety of consumer package goods companies, Ibotta also offers “any brand” savings as a way to encourage shoppers to use the app. That means you could save money on any gallon of milk, loaf of bread, carton of eggs, or other common purchases, without having to buy a particular product.

The new shopping list feature builds on this “any brand” program, Ibotta says, allowing consumers to add any product across any category to their list and then automatically see which savings and cash back offers are available to them.

The smart shopping list at launch works with over 150,000 stores across the U.S., including Target, Safeway, Costco, Whole Foods, Walmart, Publix and more. To date, Ibotta’s “any brand” program has delivered over $25 million in cash rebates to shoppers, but it still requires that users browse through the list of rebates and select them in the mobile app.

shopping-list-ibotta

With the smart shopping list, available from the menu on the left-side of the app, Ibotta instead allows you to simply use the app as you would any other notepad or list-making utility. You enter in your shopping items in the box at the top of the screen, select your store, and when you’re finished, tap “find rebates.”

Ibotta will then return a list of matching coupons and cash-back offers you can use to save on the items you’re looking to buy. You still have to jump through the hoops of interacting with the brand’s content and verifying your purchases, but it does save time in finding matching rebates in the first place.

At the end of the day, Ibotta may still require some work to use – but so did paper coupons. However, the app appeals not only to a younger demographic that no longer clips coupons but cares about savings, while also earning the love of the extreme couponing crowd that stacks Ibotta’s offers with paper coupons to save even more.

Ibotta’s updated app with the smart shopping list is a free download on iTunes and Google Play.

Does Ringly Have A Place In An Apple Watch World?

The first thing I thought when I opened my Ringly box was that it smelled. Bad. Like electronics that had caught on fire and were then put out in some sort of chemical bath. But the company told me that the ring I received (an early review unit sent to reporters) was part of a bad “beta batch.” More recently, they replaced it with another. It didn’t smell nearly as bad.

But now my first thought was not of Ringly’s scent, or lack thereof, but whether a wearable device like this — one that alerts you to calls, texts, emails, app updates and more by way of lights and vibrations – has a place in an Apple Watch world.

While the Apple Watch’s overall usefulness is still hotly debated, the device easily fills the same role that Ringly does, while also offering the benefits of a health monitor and app platform. And it’s selling.

Though many popular app makers have yet to get on board with Apple’s wearable, it’s arguable that there doesn’t really need to be an Apple Watch app for everything. Instead, the Watch is at its best when it serves up timely, relevant and contextually aware information – like an incoming call, a text, a breaking news alert or notification about a sale at the store you’re now entering.

Likewise, Ringly also wants to be a tool you use as a way to stay on top of your most important notifications, while allowing you to finally stow your smartphone back in your purse where it belongs.

ringly

Founded in 2013, New York-based Ringly has been one of the better-known “smart jewelry” startups, and is backed by $6.1 million in venture funding from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, First Round, High Line Venture Partners, Mesa Ventures, PCH International, The Social+Capital Partnership and Highway1.

Sold online, the device has been designed to appeal specifically to women, whose needs had been largely ignored by the makers of other wearables, like smartwatches and health trackers, that, before, were often clunky, large, or simply not attractive enough to accompany the fashionable clothing choices that many women like to wear.

Ringly’s co-founder and CEO Christina Mercando, who previously worked as a Senior Product and Design Manager at eBay, said she came up with the idea when she realized that many women have a habit of keeping their phones in their purses, causing them to miss important calls and texts.

Chic…For A Wearable

dive-bar-ringlyThe device itself is like a piece of costume jewelry, and comes with different stones and band options.

I tested “Dive Bar,” pictured right, which is a rhodium-tone plated ring with a tourmalated quartz stone. Others are 18K matte gold plated with semi-precious stones. The company tells us it’s launching new finishes and stones, as well as other designs and collaborations in the future. An upcoming collection, for example, will include both bracelets and rings.

The look-and-feel of Ringly is fairly chic, in terms of tech wearables, but may still be a little oversized to fit everyone’s tastes.

Its bulk is due to the fact that, inside, the ring features electronics that allow it to buzz and light up when there’s something you need to know.

How Ringly Works

With Ringly, users pair the app via Bluetooth with an accompanying smartphone application, and then can customize the light and vibration patterns for how their ring responds to various activities. By default, Ringly alerts you to calls, texts, emails and calendar events, but it also supports a large number of third-party applications.

You can customize alerts for Outlook, Twitter, Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat, Lyft, Uber, Pinterest, Hinge, Tinder, OK Cupid, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Airbnb, Vine, Hangouts, WhatsApp, Slack, Clue, Google Shopping Express, Poshmark, Dark Sky, GroupMe, Skype, Etsy, Fitbit, KakaoTalk, Kik, Life360, Viber and Alien Blue.

That makes Ringly fairly competitive when it comes to Apple Watch and its alerting capabilities, as the lineup includes the most-used applications, and specifically those where you would want to know if there’s been a change – like a new message, comment, post, match, ping, etc.

  1. IMG_2040

  2. IMG_2041

  3. IMG_2042

  4. IMG_2043

  5. IMG_2039

  6. IMG_2044

To configure these in the Ringly app, you just tap an “Edit” button and add those items you want to include to your list of Notifications. After doing so, you can then further customize the alert type by tapping on the item to change the color of the alert and the vibration pattern. You can also add specific contacts to the app, allowing you to receive alerts when someone important is calling or texting.

Ringly only supports a handful of colors (blue, green, yellow, purple and red), and four are already used by the default alert types (phone call, texts, email and calendar events). That means you’ll have to get clever with regard to your customizations – perhaps making all messaging apps one color, but using varying vibration patterns to help differentiate them, for instance.

The app itself is very well-designed – elegant, even – and simple to use. In addition to configuring your alerts, the app also lets you control other aspects of the Ringly experience, including whether to put the ring in sleep mode when it’s not used, buzz when it’s out of range, and more.

Charging Ringly

Another clever aspect to Ringly is the way the device is charged. The Ringly ships in a small, black ring box that plugs in via USB. You place the ring inside the box – which looks like any other traditional ring box – in order to start charging it. The ring box has its own battery that lasts over a week before needing to be charged via USB, but the company advises that the box is plugged in regularly.

  1. IMG_2031

  2. IMG_2030

Though initially I thought making the charger a ring box was a nifty trick, that also means that Ringly can’t really be stored in a jewelry box along with other rings, or in a jewelry cabinet. It needs to be near a USB charger or the USB port on your computer. And because I already have enough devices and cords hanging around my nightstand, Ringly’s charger found its way to the office, alongside Fitbit and my other less-used wearables.

While setting up the Ringly charger in the office, I took the time to give it a whiff, and it seems like it’s the box and not the ring itself that’s the source of the new, less noticeable smell. Though definitely far better than the first ring (that one smelled so bad it was unusable), there’s still a slightly unpleasant scent to the box which then transfers to the ring. But as I wore Ringly, the odor faded. At this point, I wouldn’t call the smell a deal-breaker, but rather a point of concern.

IMG_2035Ringly says the ring will last 24-48 hours on a single charge, which means you can count on using it for at least a day. But it’s a good habit to return it to the charger at night.

Ringly Vs. Apple Watch

While the Ringly worked as advertised and was easy to use, there was a part of me that felt it was a little juvenile to be wearing a device that flashed lights, however subtle they may be. I imagine some customers will decide the same, and will turn off the lights altogether in favor of vibrations alone. However, doing so makes it more difficult to identify the incoming alerts.

There’s also a learning curve to using Ringly. You may not immediately remember what the colors or vibrations mean, so it’s best to start off with a small group of alerts, then add more customizations over time.

In addition, priced at $195-$260 (depending on the style), the Ringly is not exactly an impulse buy or toy – you’ll have to seriously consider if you’ll use Ringly enough to make it worth the investment. This is true, too, because Ringly doesn’t last forever. The battery is not user-replaceable and reportedly the ring has a three-year lifespan. (The company says now it’s more like ~2 years.)

IntoTheWoods

And in my case, having spent just a little more on the Apple Watch, a notification-sending ring feels a little redundant.

That’s not to say that Ringly doesn’t have its place. After all, not everyone wants an Apple Watch or other wrist wearable. But it raises the question whether there’s going to be a large enough market for this, at its current price points.

Asked about the Apple Watch competition, Mercando emphasized Ringly’s looks.

“There are a lot of wearable tech products on the market today, but many of them lack the aesthetic quality that women are looking for when they shop for accessories,” she explained. “Ringly takes a different approach by making the ‘technology’ feel discreet and invisible.”

“We strive to create designs that our customers would want to buy even if it didn’t have technology inside,” she added. “In the future, we believe people will be shopping for wearable tech devices the way that today they shop for clothing. There will not be a one-size-fits-all solution; we’ll want to buy the piece that fits our personal style and the functionality that fits our lifestyle.”

But the bigger difference between the ring and the smartwatch is not about their aesthetics, but that the watch actually allows you to take action from your wrist when an important alert comes through. You can take that call, or quickly reply to that text.

Ringly only alerts you. That means, if you want to respond, you’ll still have to dig your phone out of your bag anyway. And wasn’t that the hell that the ring was supposed to deliver us from in the first place?
